The Kikuichi Company has a long and distinguished history. The origins of the company can be traced back some seven hundred years ago when the emperor Gotoba authorized Shiro Kanenaga (Kikuichi family ancestor) to be one of his swordsmiths. For the next several hundred years Kikuichi manufactured samurai swords that bore the emperors chrysanthemum symbol or "Kiku-no-mon" as a mark of their excellence. When the samurai era came to and end in 1868 Kikuichi reinvented itself as a maker of cutlery and they continue to carry on the high standard of craftsmanship they once applied to the making of samurai swords.
