The Atoma Diamond plate #140 grit is the standard for whetstone flattening. It removes material extremely quickly and allows you to flatten your stones with relative ease. They are also great for major repairs as they can very quickly remove steel from a knife. We wouldn't make a habit of using it to sharpen knives though as doing so will pull diamonds off the surface making it less and less effective as a flattening or sharpening tool.

Does the flattening job quicker than sandpaper or rubbing stones together. Easy to clean, dries pretty fast, seems indestructible - buuuut I still store it carefully. I guess that for simple dressing/lapping it's a bit of a pain to take this bulky thing out and having to wash it afterwards. For the price though it would be hard to find as effective a flattening device.

This is the cornerstone of any reprofile work you have to do. Plus, if you have previously used something like the Naniwa flattening wave stone, you'll find just how flat your stones are (hint, not as flat as you think, probably) once you start using this to lap.
Peo tip - If you buy this, you can just get the glue on 400 plate and stick it on the other side of the metal plate, thus saving yourself lots of money and space.
