The Atoma Diamond plate #400 grit is the standard for whetstone flattening. It removes material extremely quickly and allows you to flatten your stones with relative ease. They are also great for major repairs as they can very quickly remove steel from a knife. We wouldn't make a habit of using it to sharpen knives though as doing so will pull diamonds off the surface making it less and less effective as a flattening or sharpening tool.

Gold standard for flattening stones. Good price and seriously fantastic shipping time from sharp knife. Thanks again

This Atoma is great for flattening a stone. It doesn't take too much off and leaves a very nice clean surface.

Versatile diamond plate – the 400 grit can be safely used to flatten both synthetic and natural stones, and either this or the 140 grit are a must for any home sharpener to ensure good sharpening technique. As long as you aren't running a knife over it to do repofiling work (in which case, choose the 140 grit), you shouldn't be pulling diamonds off of this and it should last for a long, long time. Gage is a very knowledgeable and exceptionally kind: a joy to order from, and a great shop to support.
